Maths Starters SATs test sheets Levels 3-7
Written for pupils in Year 9 at Secondary School
Maths Starters SATs test sheets Levels 3-7 is an extensive resource containing 8* test papers very similar to the end of Key Stage 3 (ages 13-14) statutory tests. Using the revision papers will give your child further opportunities to familiarise themselves with typical SATs questions in terms of the wording, layout and diagrams. Answer books are also supplied so that you can precisely mark the papers to the same standard as actual test markers do. From this you can determine which National Curriculum level your child is currently working at.
Which pupils sit the tests?
More commonly known as SATs, it is a statutory requirement for all Year 9 (and Year 6) pupils in state education schools - England, Wales and Northern Ireland - to sit the tests. In addition, some private schools also choose to use the material, as they are a very thorough assessment.
Maths Starters SATs test sheets papers have been written for **Year 9 pupils across a wide range of abilities. Questions range from simple but crucial skills – such as basic bar chart interpretation and four-rules (+, -, x and ÷) up to complex algebra – such as solving simultaneous equations and reading/constructing linear and polynomial graphs.
What is included?
The skills and concepts of the Key Stage 3 maths curriculum is vast; in addition the ability of pupils within one class – let alone around the UK – vary. This is why there are 4 Tiers of entry. Maths Starters SATs test sheets contains the following:
- Two, Tier 3 – 5 (calculator and non-calculator) papers designed for Year 9 pupils who find Key Stage 3 mathematics demanding.
- Two, Tier 4 – 6 (calculator and non-calculator) papers designed for Year 9 pupils who are more able than those in the previous group. Teachers enter pupils in this tier, if they believe they have the potential to score up to a level 6 (good typical score) but also have the safety of easier level 4-5 questions.
- Two, Tier 5 – 7 (calculator and non-calculator) papers designed for Year 9 pupils who teachers feel are above average. Here, such mathematicians can achieve a level 7 – a very good score.
- Two, Mental Arithmetic tests on paper and CD. The mental arithmetic test is worth 20% of the overall score. The test is aural, whereby 30 questions are read aloud to the pupil. Pupils are given a specific time limit (5, 10, 15 seconds) to calculate and write down the answer. Hence mental skills are tested as there is not sufficient time to complete a longer pencil-and-paper method. The mental test administered depends on the tier (see above bullet points). You may choose to read aloud the questions, or play the CD.
- Answer books. The books have been written and presented in a form similar to the actual mark books which test markers use. Reading the test booklet will give an insight into how quite complex questions are marked - which often credit correct methods despite an incorrect final answer.
- CD which includes all the above test material saved in a pdf file format. This means, you can easily view and print out the pages, provided your computer has a program which can read pdf files. Adobe Acrobat Reader is a popular program which is often used to read pdf files. If your computer does not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, you can download the program free from www.adobe.com.
Note: Tier 6 – 8 NOT INCLUDED. Fewer pupils sit this paper. Teachers would deem a pupil entered for this paper as very skilled at mathematics. Level 8 is a demanding curriculum for most Year 9’s in the country. A Separate exclusive booklet of Level 8 questions will be published after Christmas.
** Can also be used with other age groups - for example, the easier 3-5 papers can be of use to children in Year 6; please email help@maths-starters.com for further clarification.
